Geocache Description:
Elk Run Shaft is a memorial built on the air shaft of The Rolling Mill Mine. On July 10, 1902 a gas and dust explosion rocked the mine causing th death of many miners. Early reports state that only 4 miners were brought alive and that very few miners were killed by the blast, the rest were killed by "afterdamp", a poisonous mixture of gasses formed by the blast.
The mine did reopen producing approx. 22 1/2 million tons of coal until it was closed in 1931. The mine was owned by The Cambria Iron Works at the time of the blast. The president was Powell Stackhouse.
